Naib Subedar Ravinder Singh, a 29-year-old ace shooter from the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), made waves by clinching the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Free Pistol event at the ISSF World Championships. This prestigious event took place on October 20, 2023, at the Egypt International Olympic City Range, where Ravinder showcased his ambidextrous shooting skills, defeating tough competition.
Ravinder faced off against 47 top shooters from around the world, exhibiting remarkable poise under pressure. He started with a modest score of 93 in his first series but bounced back with stunning scores of 98, 94, 95, 93, and a final flourish of 96, ultimately finishing with an impressive total of 569 points. This performance not only secured him the gold but also placed him ahead of South Korea’s Kim Cheongyong and Individual Neutral Athlete Anton Aristarkhov, who took the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Remarkably, Ravinder’s victory came just days after he returned to training for only 4–5 days following a two-week hiatus for the birth of his daughter. His unmatched determination and disciplined approach were pivotal in achieving this significant career milestone.
In addition to his individual gold, Ravinder’s exceptional skills contributed to India winning a silver medal in the 50m Free Pistol team event. Partnering with fellow marksmen Kamaljeet (540 points) and Yogesh Kumar (537 points), the trio amassed a commendable total of 1646 points, narrowly missing gold, which went to South Korea by just two points.
Ravinder, a National Games silver medallist this year, expressed his gratitude after the victory. He stated, “It’s not my personal achievement but for all those who stood behind me. I am thankful to my family and the Army for their support.” His humility further endeared him to fans and aspiring shooters alike.
The homecoming celebration for Ravinder in his hometown Bishnah saw a massive turnout, with residents filling the streets to honor their local hero. Former MLA Ashwani Kumar Sharma called Ravinder a role model for the youth, emphasizing the inspiration he provides through his dedication and achievement.
Ravinder Singh’s performance at the ISSF World Championships not only adds to India’s growing legacy in shooting sports but also serves as a reminder of the hard work and sacrifices that elite athletes make. His story transcends sports, inspiring many to persevere against the odds.
