Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for the welfare of construction workers under various schemes. This significant amount will ensure the online transfer of funds directly to eligible beneficiaries across Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials confirmed that the sanctioned sum will be dispatched to all Assistant Labour Commissioners, who will facilitate immediate transfers into the bank accounts of registered construction workers. This decision reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting the workforce in the construction sector.
The Labour Department stated that the assistance distribution spans several flagship welfare schemes focused on enhancing the lives of construction workers. The schemes include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illnesses, and financial support for the families of deceased workers.
Other initiatives also encompass marriage assistance for workers and meritorious awards for the children of registered workers. By highlighting these schemes, the government aims to uplift the socio-economic status of those in the construction industry.
During the 22nd meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) in July, CM Abdullah stressed the necessity for a more inclusive definition of ‘construction worker.’ This action aims to ensure that all vulnerable labourers in the unorganised sector benefit from these critical welfare measures.
He reiterated his administration’s drive to explore innovative policy mechanisms designed to expand the coverage of welfare schemes, ensure financial security for workers, and align the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated. He reaffirmed his government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of these hard-working individuals.
In a separate but equally significant matter, Chief Minister Abdullah expressed profound sorrow over a tragic bus accident that took place early this morning in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The incident involved a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims.
The CM conveyed his condolences to families affected by the accident and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of any injured individuals. Reports indicated that the bus, which was transporting 46 Indian pilgrims from Mecca to Medina, collided with a tanker. The devastating accident resulted in the death of 45 pilgrims, leaving only one survivor who sustained serious injuries.
Such incidents emphasize the importance of safety protocols, particularly for pilgrims undertaking sacred journeys. Abdullah’s concerns extend not only to the immediate victims but also to the broader implications regarding the welfare of Indian workers and pilgrims abroad.
