Cloudburst Damages Houses in Kishtwar’s Chatroo Area

A cloudburst struck the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir early Saturday morning, causing extensive damage to multiple houses and structures. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. following a night of heavy rainfall.

Officials reported that while several residential buildings sustained damage, there were thankfully no reports of injuries or fatalities. The swift surge of water and debris triggered by the cloudburst led to significant destruction.

Immediately following the incident, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chatroo, alongside police and civil administration teams, arrived on the scene to assess the damage and initiate relief efforts. Currently, restoration work is actively underway to assist those affected by this severe weather.

This cloudburst coincided with an ongoing spell of moderate to heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department had previously issued warnings of intense showers over the Jammu division, predicting the possibility of flash floods, landslides, and severe waterlogging in vulnerable zones.

In a separate weather-related incident, heavy rain resulted in significant waterlogging in the Pahlipora area of Shopian district, located in south Kashmir. Several homes experienced flooding as rainwater poured in. Local police, alongside the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), were deployed to conduct rescue and relief operations for the affected residents.

Officials urge vigilance among residents, especially those in low-lying and landslide-prone areas. Authorities recommend avoiding proximity to streams, nallahs, and unstable slopes until weather conditions improve. The government continues to monitor the situation closely in Chatroo and other impacted regions.

Emergency services remain on high alert, ready to respond to any further developments or issues arising from these adverse weather conditions. The situation evolves as more details are awaited regarding the response efforts and recovery from the cloudburst in Kishtwar.
