Jammu & Kashmir Pushes Startup Growth, Eyes Tourism Boost with New Rail Connectivity

In a forward-looking statement, Omar Abdullah emphasized the government’s commitment to building a strong startup ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, while acknowledging that the Union Territory is still catching up with states that began their startup journeys earlier.

Speaking on the sidelines of a public function, the Chief Minister noted that the Startup Policy 2024 has laid a crucial foundation for growth. With budgetary provisions now in place, the government aims to actively support innovation, funding, and entrepreneurial development across the region.

“We can learn from the experiences of other states,” he said, adding that avoiding previously made mistakes elsewhere will help J&K accelerate its progress.

Focus on Innovation Infrastructure

During a recent visit to the Government College of Engineering and Technology, Abdullah revealed that students and faculty raised a demand for establishing an incubation centre—an initiative that could play a vital role in nurturing local startups and fostering innovation at the grassroots level.

Vande Bharat Train to Strengthen Tourism

On the infrastructure front, Abdullah welcomed the launch of the direct Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu and Srinagar, scheduled for April 30. He described the development as a significant boost to the tourism sector.

Highlighting the improved capacity, he noted that the previous eight-coach train operating between Katra and Srinagar will now be replaced with a twenty-coach service, allowing more passengers to travel comfortably and efficiently.

“Increasing both the frequency and capacity of train services will greatly enhance connectivity and tourism potential in the region,” he said.

Strong Condemnation of Political Violence

Abdullah also condemned a recent shooting incident in Washington involving former U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing relief that he survived.

“Violence has no place in politics,” he stated firmly, stressing that disagreements must always be resolved through democratic and peaceful means.

Reflecting on Jammu and Kashmir’s own history, he pointed out the heavy toll of political violence over the past three decades, where leaders and workers from multiple parties—including BJP, National Conference, Congress, and CPI(M)—have lost their lives.

“No one understands the cost of violence better than we do,” he added.

Call for Peace and Dialogue in West Asia

Addressing global concerns, Abdullah urged continued dialogue amid rising tensions in West Asia, particularly in light of cancelled diplomatic talks involving Iran.

“Even if discussions happen over the phone, they must continue,” he said, advocating for sustained diplomatic engagement to ensure long-term peace and stability.

He concluded with a call for calm and reconciliation: “What has happened is in the past. The focus now should be on restoring peace and allowing nations to move forward.
